Know What You Already Own: Building Your Prior-Credit Inventory
Before making a single phone call to a college, adult learners must take a full accounting of every credit they have ever earned — traditional, military, corporate, or exam-based. This foundational module establishes the habit of evidence-based self-advocacy and produces the master credit inventory that every subsequent module builds upon. Completing this module first prevents the costly mistake of enrolling before knowing how many credits you already hold.
- 1.1Hunting Down Every Transcript You HaveIncluded
- 1.2Decoding Your DD-214 and Military Training RecordsIncluded
- 1.3Corporate Training, Certifications, and Non-Traditional CreditIncluded
- 1.4Building Your Complete Credit Inventory and Gap AnalysisIncluded
Navigating ACE Credits, Military Benefits, and Prior Learning Assessment
Knowing you have credits is only half the battle — getting a school to actually accept them is where most adult learners lose money and time. This module teaches the mechanics of ACE credit recommendations, every exam-based credit pathway, the art of writing a winning PLA portfolio, and how to stack military education benefits so tuition costs approach zero. It is sequenced after the inventory module so learners apply each strategy to credits they have already identified.
- 2.1How ACE Credit Recommendations Actually Work — and How to Get Schools to Accept ThemIncluded
- 2.2CLEP, DSST, and Exam-Based Credit — Your Fastest ShortcutIncluded
- 2.3Writing a Winning Prior Learning Assessment PortfolioIncluded
- 2.4Military Education Benefits — Maximizing TA, GI Bill, and MyCAAIncluded
Conquering the Math and English Gateway
Math and English placement requirements are the single most common reason adult learners stall or quit. This module provides a multi-lane bypass strategy — placement test prep, CLEP and ModernStates pathways, portfolio-based composition credit, and understanding remedial course avoidance policies. It is sequenced before the college-shopping module because a learner's math and English standing directly affects which schools are feasible options.
- 3.1Understanding Placement Tests and Why They Are Not the Last WordIncluded
- 3.2Free and Low-Cost Prep: ModernStates.org and the Road to CLEPIncluded
- 3.3Alternative English Credit Paths — Composition by Portfolio and Dual EnrollmentIncluded
- 3.4Math Placement Strategy for Non-Traditional LearnersIncluded
Shopping Smart: Finding the Best College for Your Credits, Budget, and Life
Not all colleges treat adult learners equally — and the wrong choice can cost tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of credits. This module equips learners to evaluate and compare institutions across accreditation, transfer-friendliness, cost, format, and life-fit using a structured scorecard. It introduces ModernStates' free associate degree pathway, community college on-ramps, and the specific adult-friendly public universities and online schools that consistently earn high marks from returning adult learners.
- 4.1Online, Hybrid, or In-Person — Choosing the Right Learning Format for Your LifeIncluded
- 4.2Evaluating Online Schools — Accreditation, Reputation, and Transfer TrapsIncluded
- 4.3Adult-Friendly Public and Hybrid Schools — The Hidden GemsIncluded

Workforce Development Pathways — Degree Completion with a Career Payoff
Degree completion is most sustainable when it is tied to a concrete career outcome. This module maps high-demand workforce development sectors — renewable energy, air traffic control, aviation, healthcare, cybersecurity, and skilled trades — to specific degree pathways, employer tuition benefits, registered apprenticeships, and industry certifications that can be converted to college credit. Learners leave with a career-aligned degree pathway, not just a generic diploma.

Learners now synthesize their credit inventory, school selection, workforce pathway, and benefit eligibility into a single, actionable Degree-Completion Plan with a semester-by-semester roadmap, a complete financial aid checklist, a true total cost calculation, and a 30-day launch calendar. The module closes with accountability structures to keep learners on track well beyond enrollment day.

Andrew Wheeler
I know where you are right now. Heck, I've spent 15+ years working in higher ed with returning adults just like you. You've been carrying this unfinished degree around for years — maybe decades. It shows up when you're filling out a job application, or when someone asks about your education, or at 2 a.m. when you're wondering if you missed your window. I want to tell you something plainly: you didn't miss it. And you're probably a lot closer to done than you realize.
Also, please know I've been in your shoes. I returned as an adult to complete a music degree from a highly-accredited online college. I learned how to advocate for myself, seek out non-traditional sources of credit, and use the college's transfer credit policies to earn credits quickly and efficiently - especially the general education requirements like Math, English, History, Sociology, and Science. I definitely did not want to waste my valuable family and work time taking long, arduous and pointless general eds.
Here's what I've seen over and over again working with returning adult students: the credits are there. The military training. The corporate certifications. The old transcripts from a school you attended for two semesters before life pulled you in a different direction. Most returning students walk in thinking they're starting from scratch and discover they're already a third of the way — or more — to a degree. The system just never bothered to show them how to count what they already owned.
That's what Degree Comeback Academy is designed to fix. Not with inspiration, but with a process. A real, step-by-step system that starts with a complete audit of everything you've already earned, runs through how to get schools to actually accept your ACE credits and military benefits, tackles the placement test problem head-on with free tools and legal workarounds, and ends with a semester-by-semester plan, a real cost estimate, and a 30-day action plan to get you enrolled. Every module is built around real dollar savings and real time savings — because your time and money are finite, and the traditional college advice machine was not designed with you in mind.
I also want to address the objection I hear most often: "I'm too busy." I built this course for people who are too busy. Active-duty service members. Working parents with a narrow window on weekday evenings. Stay-at-home caregivers who are brilliant and capable and have been told — implicitly or explicitly — that college is for some other season of life. This course respects your constraints. It doesn't ask you to rearrange your life around a degree. It asks you to use the system smarter so the degree fits into the life you already have.
You've already done the hard part — you started, you accumulated experience, you kept going in every other area of your life. Let me show you how to turn all of that into a credential that reflects who you actually are. The finish line is closer than you think, and I'm going to walk you right to it.
